how do i get started in the computer field?

im doing constuction work now and i dont think its for me computers are my passion. what are some things i can do to get started?
what certificates should i go for?
how much do they cost?
where can i get them?
i live in the bay area of california close to SF and San Jose silicon valley
trying to avoid years of college because i really have alot of the knownledge already

you could probably look for learning from home programs. A lot of them let you set your own pace so you could do longer programs in a much shorter amount of time. In alot of schools you can also challenge for credit in certain courses. So even though you will enroll in a long program you just challenge the course and if you pass a test you get credit for that course.

How about Vocational School? If not then try building up your Resume, and have certificates to back up your experiences you have. You can also try applying to different Technical Companies that look for people with those type of skills.

It is great that you live in silicon valley, where you can find a lot of gigs just through talking with people around you, and there're lots of companies out there who don't care if you have a degree.
One way is to do some contracting work. Try out rentforcoder.com, and build up your skills and portfolio. Another way is contribute to open source projects like Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org) . People definitely respect these experiences.
